Pic of the Day: Manta Bowl, Donsol, the Philippines

Donsol is best known for whale sharks which we snorkelled with yesterday (sort of – they’re surprisingly quick and visibility was down so you could only see them for a few seconds – one passed directly under me which led me to exclaim in surprise which isn’t a good idea when wearing a snorkel as I ended up drinking sea water). Today was Manta Bowl – a drift dive where 22 metres down is the top of an underwater mountain that is home to manta rays. The water was crystal clear and we saw four big boppers (as well as a baby thresher shark) – each around 10 foot from wing tip to wing tip, graceful and incredibly impressive. One inquisitive manta put on a show, circling in front of us several times.
