Climbing, Sas De Stria, Dolomites

Day 3 of our Dolomites climbing holiday brought more beautiful weather and we went to climb Sas De Stria (“Rock of the Witch”) near the Valporola Pass. It was a popular 8 pitch route and a large group ahead of us caused a log jam that was borderline comical but for the fact that they dislodged a lot of loose rock and turned a couloir into a shooting gallery. My girlfriend took a decent sized rock on the helmet and we completed the route via an alternative finish in order to get out of the fall line. The top of Sas De Stria is cross-crossed with Austrian WWI trenches cut from the rock; another sobering reminder of what happened here.
